Paragraph of Definition (Dang, I mislabeled this)

Directions: Write your paragraph of definition using one (or two) of your sources that address your question (your thesis). Think about what your audience will need to know in order for you to effectively write your argument. This is certainly more complex than, "According to Webster, terrorism is defined as..." You will need to explore how your source(s) approach the topic, and make it approachable to their audience (i.e. you). To help your classmates' responses, please name your audience as you have identified it for this particular phase.

Please respond to the post by March 5th.

  1. I guess I don't really understand this assignment. Can anyone help explain this to me, please?

    1. Write a paragraph defining something that might need to be explained to your audience. For me I went with how MMOs are really almost emulating mini communities. Seems obvious to me but not to my audience.

  2. Probably one of the greatest treasure troves of game design ideas for education can come from the Massively Mulitplayer Online game genre. These games, commonly referred to by the acronym MMO, feature many things found in real life communities. This can include, but not limited to, the formation of a robust economy, social and political structures, as well as a cultural history (Delwiche 160). Popular examples of these games include Everquest, and World of Warcraft (Delwiche 163, Gee 37). MMO games are not only simulate real life, but also require their players to learn important skills to advance. James Gee points out in particular how MMO games require players to work in cross-functional teams. Each player is required to not only be an expert in their particular field of play, for example, a wizard casting fire magic. The player must also know how their skills interact with other peoples skills to advance (Gee 37). This is something that business' desire in people but our current school system fails to provide.

  3. When People choose to pursue a career in criminal justice, the last thing they think about is CI Trauma. CI Trauma is the trauma people who work in law enforcement may encounter after many years of responding to critical incidents such as rapes, homicides, child abuse and suicides. Although law enforcement may not encounter these disturbing incidents on a daily basis, when they do, they usually leave the officer who encountered the incident feeling traumatized, shocked, and confused.

  4. I would like to assume everyone is aware of the failure rate of children born into poverty. The truth is not everyone does. Most of the time, those that do, especially the impoverished, do not know why these children fail. People might think it is simply because inner city kids are thugs, or worse, and they do not care enough to succeed. The reality is that many of these children do not have the resources that children of better off families have. Initially, I wrote this paper to the general public, to inform them about the truths of impoverished children and the effects poverty has on their educational success. However, if people just believe that poor kids are just dumb or thugs, the truth of why these kids have a difficult time at succeeding will not be common knowledge.

  5. Going to school is not something most people think about; it is natural for most as if it were breathing. The reason it should be considered is because what if there are better ways to get an education? Single-sex classes are becoming a popular route as a way of learning in today's society. The separation of genders in schools was termed segregation back in the mid-90s, but is now coming back as a more effective way of teaching in schools. The new found popularity is based on the hypothesis that males and females learn differently and therefore, should be taught differently.
