Directions: Write a paragraph from a contending source (to act as the counterargument to your argument). Answer one or more of the following questions: What might people who disagree with you have to say? What is the most rational argument from those nay-sayers? Where would you go to find a rational argument from those people?
Due: April 9th before 7pm.
Even though stress still affects our law enforcement personnel, there are some people who believe that that job related stress is not the major cause for police suicide. According to Emily Welker, “there are generally more resources available now than there once were for law enforcement officers struggling with mental health issues, including the sort of peer assistance crisis teams that Cass County Deputy Tony Krogh helped to start in Cass County. When it comes to suicide, it’s not entirely clear how much greater the risk is for law enforcement.” She also explains that comparing law enforcement suicide rates to those of the general population isn’t fair and that a comparison against the military would be better.
ReplyDeleteI have found there are many spectators as to the limitations of single-gender education. It is a belief that the entire point of public schooling is so the children can learn from each other. The way they learn is by discovering their gender identities, ethnicities and how to interact with those other children. However, it can be argued in my favor by pointing out this is a choice and some schools are offering only segregated classes, so boys and girls will still mingle.
ReplyDeleteWhen you think about stereotypes, its obvious that some are true and some are not. Many people who are represented in the media, who are minorities, feel that the only representation they have senn of themselves are the negative instead of the positive. Especially black women who repeatedly see themselves beign portrayed as angry black women. I think that the ones who would counter argue that this representation is degrading and misguided, would say that they are portrayed as "angry" because they are actually angry. Everything that African American women have gone through has given them the right to feel hatred and anger, and at one point black women were very angry, but not al black women remained in a state of turmoil. I feel that the people who disagree with me will push the issue that anger is the only thing that they are familiar with when it comes to black women. They could list on and on about Condoleeza Rice and Michelle Obama and their angry characteristics, which in turn is misunderstood passion. People who disagree with my argument would make an excuse to why black women deserve to be protrayed negatively. I see no excuse for it.
ReplyDeleteI haven't really found any opposing arguments that there are damages caused by the sexualization of girls. What I have found is the rebuttal from marketers that they only produce products that sell therefore, these products are still being purchased, probably by parents, so they can't really complain as the parents are facilitating the damage. They further this argument by saying that if a particular style or design of clothing is offensive to a parent then they should simply not purchase that item for their child. While this is an accurate statement, in that most children do not purchase their own clothing, I think it is a little misguided to place all of the blame on the parent. These sexualized messages have invaded the media, toys, clothing...basically every aspect of society. Many parents may not realize the damage that sexualization does to young girls and most manufacturers don't care. They care about the bottom line. So parents have to educate themselves and be aware of what each purchase means to their daughter, not let the marketers tell them what their child should be wearing.
ReplyDeleteHerbert Spencer believed the fittest, more intelligent and capable members of society will produce a more advanced society, while the less capable will die out. He thought that the more intelligent people will produce a more advance society unless misguided do-gooders get in the way and help the less fit survive. People who believe in Spencer's theory would not want to provide education to the poor. These people would believe that because some people are poor they do not deserve an education or any type of advancement. I would argue that in order to better society we would have to educate the poor. They would argue that in order to better society we need to weed out the poor.
