Argument-Driven Paper

Directions: Write 200 words on how you believe you will use the main ideas in your essay (the thesis and your beliefs that drive that argument) to create unity in your paper. Think about how your beliefs on any topic can drive an argument. If someone cuts you off in line, you either choose to say something, or you choose not to. You make that choice based on several beliefs about yourself and your nature, as well as the subsequent argument you might have with yourself. Ask yourself why you chose this topic, examine the fundamental nature of the argument and what might drive that argument, and then you might get your 200 word answer: what will make up the skeleton of this paper? Example: my argument is about bees and their slow erradication over the past decades. I mean to discuss the ecological reasons for their disappearance, as well as the man-made reasons. I believe that bees are important to the ecology of the world, and the very existence of bees is necessary for life to continue. I will use what I know to be true about bees as the foundation of my reasons and analysis, and my evidence will prove my belief about bees to be true. Due before class on Wednesday, April 2nd.

  1. My argument is about the sexualization of children, specifically through clothing, and the impact this has on children. I believe that marketers are sexualizing our children at increasingly younger ages and I think the negative effects of this are being overlooked. I believe that parents are ultimately responsible for making choices for their children and they need to be cognizant of the repercussions of their children wearing this type of clothing. I chose this subject because I can see the effects in the children in my life and I want to help educate parents on the damage that is being done to their children in the name of consumerism. The marketers are trying to make money and as long as someone is supporting their businesses by buying this clothing, they will continue to produce these products. If parents take a stand and stop buying this type of clothing, they can actively send a message to the marketers that they will not stand by and allow childhood to be sold. By doing nothing, their inaction send a different statement. I will use my research to support my thesis and also to provide examples from multiple sources to provide evidence that will prove the validity of my beliefs.

  3. My argument is about the negative effects of severe stress in a law enforcement career. I believe that there is a connection between officer’s suicide, job burnout, divorce, substance abuse and a career in law enforcement and that most law enforcement agencies, such as police departments, aren’t doing enough to help prevent these problems. I think that certain incidents in a law enforcement career can be so traumatic, that they may ultimately leave an officer unable to fulfill their job duties. I chose this topic because I am studying to become a law enforcement professional and someone I was close with was severely affected by not being able to deal with the stress of their career. In my mind, someone in close working relation to this person should have been able to recognize the symptoms of severe stress, yet no one ever did anything about it. If law enforcement officers weren’t pressured by their departments or their coworkers to bottle up any emotions, I am almost certain that the majority of these issues would be resolved. I will use my research as evidence, such as statistic reports, personal interviews and articles to show the negative effects a law enforcement career can have on an individual and his family.

  4. My argument is about the benefits of separating girls and boys in a classroom setting and the scientific evidence that supports that statement. In my opinion, if there is a more efficient way to teach children then we should be doing it. I believe that because America is so forward-thinking, new innovations should be embraced and not shot down immediately because it reminisces “segregation”. I chose to write my paper on this topic because I want people to see that this new and improved style of learning is helpful; it’s already successful in many places. I will use my research to not only prove a point, but to also open the eyes of parents looking to provide their children with the best education possible.

  5. My research project discusses how poverty affects the chances of a child’s success. I feel very strongly about this topic because growing up in an inner city I was surrounded by children who failed in school and eventually, later in life. I know some of the reasons why this happens, but the evidence I found substantiates my claims, and provides clinical explanations to why impoverished children are more likely to fail than their wealthier counterparts. I would like to go into a field where I work with children. It is important I be able to address the issues facing children and help them overcome those challenges. The research I have done opens areas of this issue I could not pin point. For example, the claim of poor children not being as prepared for school as wealthier ones is common knowledge, but not many people know exactly why. I want to educate people on why this so in hopes of providing parents with ways they can help their children. My claims alone, no matter how much truth there may be behind them, will not stand a chance in the academic community. The research I have done proving my claims to be true will make my paper more creditable.
